Our client are a multi-national consultancy based in London providing engineering, design, planning across all aspects of the built environment, including the water industry. They are currently looking for an experienced, Senior Clean Water Process Engineer to join their Water team in Belfast. The selected candidate will take a leading role in the delivery of technical design with a primary focus on Northern Ireland Water.


The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to support advisory services such as strategic planning, regulatory advice, asset optimisation, advising on delivery of efficient capital programmes and developing/applying transformational digital solutions. 

Reporting to the Belfast Water Team Leader, you will be part of a multidisciplinary water group covering civil, structural, MEICA and process skills. The team operates within the North Infrastructure team which includes Belfast, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Newcastle offices and works closely with other UK and Ireland offices.  


  • Adopt the lead process engineer role in the execution of: process audits, investigations, feasibility studies, outline and detailed design of drinking water treatment works and associated systems. 

  • Be responsible for developing client briefs into executable projects, and to deliver costed proposals.

  • Present ideas and concepts to clients, demonstrating technical ability and competence are essential skills for the role.

  • Take an active role in client meetings, facilitate and taking part in HAZOP studies and presenting project outputs and proposals to clients are also key parts of the role.  

  • Be responsible for planning work activities and resource requirements.

  •  Ensure technical quality is maintained through management of the review process and production. 


Essential Skills and Knowledge: 

  • Excellent knowledge and previous experience working with Northern Ireland Water and/or other water companies.

  • Experience and knowledge of water chemistry

  • Experience and knowledge of drinking water treatment processes

  • Experience and knowledge and experience in process design (Mass balances, P&ID’s)

  • Experience knowledge of water treatment hydraulics

  • Ability to be flexible in your approach and able to think laterally to solve problems, with numeracy skills.

  • Experience working in the water industry in drinking water. 

  • Knowledge of Health, Safety & Welfare and CDM Regulations requirements and processes.

  • Experienced in writing specifications, reports, business cases and technical notes.

  • Highly motivated in the digital transformation with ideas and knowledge of opportunities in this area.


Desirable Skills and Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of relevant design tools and techniques such as HAZOP studies.

  • Knowledge of 2D and 3D designs, and understanding of how this is used in the BIM environment.

  • Understanding of the requirements for working in confined spaces. May have training in confined space entry.

  •     Experience of preparing proposals for competitive tenders. 
  •     Experience of project management e.g. NEC3/4 accreditation
  •     Experience using Microsoft Project and Primavera P6. 
  •     Experience using Northern Ireland Water's system would be advantageous.
