Expert Tips for Mastering Your Job Search.

Two people looking over notes

It’s essential to know which direction and industry you want to start your career in, it is unprofessional to come across as unsure when interviewing. Showing passion when talking about the company shows that you have done some research and are interested in the role; displaying desire in your job search portrays genuine intention.

Doing research into different types of companies within the preferred industry could help you find a company that aligns with your skill set, values and goals. This will allow you to really evaluate which work-life balance and working style would suit you best for your career progression and future.

Supporting this, having a stand-out CV will go hand in hand. Creating a professional, user-friendly and attractive resume will set you apart from your competition. It is better to be precise and to the point when listing your experience, education & interests, this will keep the recruiter engaged and interested in your CV.

Harriet Waldron, Internal Recruiter: “Having a clear career vision towards the job/industry that the candidate is applying for is a ‘green flag’, and also to have evidence and examples of their skills and when they have used them in action.”

Tailoring your CV for each application should also be a focus as this shows genuine interest and attention to detail by adapting your application to the role and organisation. A supporting cover letter would also compliment this as it expresses your interest for the specific job you are applying for and this should also be updated for every application.

Making the CV and covering letter user friendly makes the application more attractive as they can access the key information easily and won’t lose interest when reading them.

Crafting solid foundations: Resumes

Developing and having a solid resume makes all the difference when sending them to potential employers.

Mark Butter, our Director: ‘Treat it as your personal advert, it should make somebody want to think ‘’I’ve got to bring this person in and chat to them’’.

Following on from Mark’s advice, using your CV to almost tease and excite potential employers can work well with landing an interview.

Liam Bertram, Internal Recruiter: “Having a greater insight into a candidate's hobbies & interests allows us to see more about them as a person and what they like to do outside of work. It is also ideal for the candidates’ skillset to match the job descriptions’ and if they have any extracurricular certificates or courses as this further shows how they want to develop their professional profile.”

Knowing what to include on your CV

It can be daunting when creating a new resume deciding what to include and what not to include. Using a template tool like Canva can be a helpful place to start as they have multiple templates to choose from and an array of resume lay-outs and styles. This gives employees a good base to build their perfect CV

The multitude of colour schemes and lay-outs allows employees to customise their CV based on the role they are applying for and the field of work they are in. A more creative role should be portrayed through your CV, giving the employer a first impression of yourself.  The more typical 'corporate' role CV should be professional and detailed.

When creating a CV it is crucial to strike the balance between professionalism and personal branding. While adding a picture to your resume can sometimes enhance it’s visual appeal and help potential employers put a face to your name, it also isn’t necessary as the UK has anti-discrimination laws to ensure an unbiased recruitment process.

Any CV should have the key pieces of information such as; education, experience and interests as the main focus. These are the main drivers behind any hiring decision. It is imperative that you view your resume as a platform to showcase your personal and professional accomplishments, but also make sure it is concise.

In conclusion, the journey toward career fulfilment is a dynamic process, and with determination and a well-crafted CV, you can confidently navigate the ever-evolving landscape of the job market.
