Senior Electrical Design Engineer – MEP Buildings on Railway Projects Birmingham | Hybrid Working £48 - £56 per hour | Inside IR35 3-Month Initial Contract + likely extensions An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Electrical Design Engineer to support the delivery of high-profile MEP Buildings serving the operation of the railway. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys fast-paced project work within a main contractor environment, delivering electrical services designs for Building Services Facilities and pumping stations for Railway Operations. The position offers hybrid working flexibility alongside the opportunity to join a busy team with a strong pipeline of ongoing work and potential extensions beyond the initial contract term. The Role You'll be involved in: Ensuring compliance with project requirements, technical assurance processes, safety-in-design principles, and applicable standards and regulations. Review and coordinate the electrical designs produced by designers, suppliers and subcontractors, ensuring interdisciplinary integration and timely completion. Manage the technical review, approval and assurance process with the Employer, Designer, CAT Checker and other stakeholders. Coordinate electrical systems, including HV/LV distribution, lighting, fire alarms, CMS, earthing and bonding, and building electrical services. Lead and participate in technical meetings, interface coordination, O&M reviews, PRAM and HAZOP meetings, ensuring actions and design issues are resolved. Liaise with construction teams to ensure electrical designs align with construction methods, programme requirements and site constraints. Review technical queries, RFIs, design changes and procurement submissions, supporting tender reviews and technical appraisals of MEICA equipment. Maintain relevant electrical standards and regulations and advise the MEP Technical Lead and Commercial Team on technical risks, interfaces and potential challenges. What They're Looking For Essential: Degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering; professional chartership preferred. Minimum 10 years’ electrical engineering experience in construction, including 5+ years delivering multidisciplinary projects. Strong technical knowledge of HV/LV distribution, lighting, fire alarms, CMS, earthing and bonding, and building electrical services. Ability to challenge and optimise design solutions, balancing technical requirements, risks and constraints. Fluent in English, with a strong understanding of multidisciplinary turnkey project delivery Collaborative, self-motivated and able to influence senior management and designers, with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail Desirable: 15-20 years' relevant electrical engineering experience Large scale project experience (eg rail, buildings, pumping stations) Railway or major infrastructure experience preferred Why Apply? We're looking for a Mechanical Design Manager to take responsibility for major MEP design packages on a significant London infrastructure project. This role doesn't require someone with decades of management experience. The priority is finding a proactive Mechanical or MEP professional who understands detailed design, can take ownership of an HVAC package and has the confidence to drive it through approvals, technical assurance and ultimately completion. The role Working alongside the MEP Package Manager, you'll become the key design contact for allocated supply chain partners and take responsibility for getting your packages over the line. You'll be involved in: Managing Stage 5 MEP and HVAC design packages through to completion Coordinating design reviews, approvals, certification and final sign-off Managing MEP suppliers and their design deliverables Resolving technical queries, scope gaps and design interface issues Coordinating between suppliers, design teams, engineering and project delivery Monitoring design progress, risks and technical compliance Supporting the resolution of Stage 4 design queries and defects Ensuring CDM requirements and design risks are properly managed Working with commercial teams where design changes affect subcontract delivery What we're looking for You'll need a deep understanding of Mechanical Building Services and HVAC design, combined with the ability to coordinate people and keep technically complex packages moving. Ideally, you'll bring: MEP design management or strong detailed design experience A Mechanical or HVAC background Experience on major infrastructure or similarly complex projects Experience managing suppliers and technical deliverables Good knowledge of CDM Regulations 2015 Strong stakeholder management and communication skills Experience working within large-scale, assured design environments A relevant White or Black CSCS Card, or the ability to obtain one Experience with NEC contracts, AutoCAD, Navisworks, ProjectWise or specialist MEP software would be beneficial. The role is based in West London, paying up to £650 per day Inside IR35 on an initial 6-month contract.
