An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Test Rig Design Lead- Mechanical Testing, to work for Rolls-Royce SMR in Derby or Warrington on projects that will contribute to the global reduction of carbon emissions. This is a unique opportunity to be involved in the design project for a new nuclear power station and the establishment of a world class testing capability. About the Role:

The Test Rig Design Lead Engineer (Mechanical Testing) will be responsible for the technical and project delivery of one or more test rigs.  The role will involve leading a team of multidisciplinary engineers to develop test rig designs through a gated review process, as well as providing technical guidance and supervision and engaging with both internal and external stakeholders. 

The Development Engineering organisation itself has responsibilities for proving that the SMR power station design meets its objectives and requirements. This will encompass the area of nuclear engineering as well as the broader scope of delivering a major infrastructure project.

About You:

You will be a Chartered Engineer (or working towards professional accreditation), Physical Sciences, Mathematics or a related discipline. You will also have:

  • Good knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals.

  • Machinery design experience, including responsibility for technical and project leadership in a relevant field. This could be gained from any relevant industry.

  • Familiarity with systems engineering principles is desirable.

  • A willingness to challenge conventional thinking, with the desire to make a difference

Key Responsibilities of the Role will be:

  • Lead a team of engineers to develop test rigs from concepts through to detailed design and operation.

  • Oversee the use of systems and process engineering techniques to ensure that an optimum test rig design is produced.

  • Lead conceptual designs, detailed designs, manufacturing specifications, operational documentation and validation procedures.

  • Components and sub-systems involved will include valves, pipes, pumps, mechanical joints, vessels, tanks, heat exchangers, actuation methods, heating sources and low and high pressure systems.

  • Use model-based engineering applications and tools to analyse test rig life cycles.

  • Provide guidance and supervision in the generation of engineering assessments for installation schemes, thermal systems, mechanism designs, component selection, heat transfer and heat balances.

  • Supervise the production of design documentations such as P&IDs, component drawings, system descriptions, engineering design definitions and design for all life-cycle attributes (such as manufacture, assembly, maintenance and decommissioning).

  • Support the procurement team to select suppliers and facilities to deliver the test rigs.

  • Build strong collaborative working relationships with suppliers.

  • Act as technical authority for the assigned test rigs and represent the Test Capability Manager at technical reviews when required.
