The role of Systems Development Engineer provides a unique opportunity to work on the development of a new nuclear power station design that will contribute to the global reduction of carbon emissions. The role could be based out of Rolls-Royce SMR’s Derby or Warrington offices, with opportunities for hybrid working.

About the Role:
You will be leading the thinking on the Verification & Validation of a part of the Rolls-Royce SMR power station design. Rolls-Royce SMR will decide which area(s) you focus on based on your skills and experience, but most engineering disciplines are covered within a nuclear power station, so there are plenty of opportunities – and room to grow into other areas if you want to broaden your knowledge.
The approach being adopted for verification & validation is based on Systems Engineering principles, which have been proven worldwide as a key tool in delivering highly complex products. Using these principles, you will work with design leads and specialists from across the engineering team to develop verification strategies that lay out the activities needed to show that the design meets its requirements. You will also be involved in the work to validate the requirements and you will oversee the wider programme of verification activities such as analysis tasks.
In some areas, physical testing will be required, and you will also be responsible for defining clear test objectives and supporting a test IPT to deliver the programme. For some types of test, you might be responsible for leading the programme from start to finish yourself, working with some world-leading testing/research laboratories. The role provides a rare and exciting opportunity to get a broad overview of some of the key technical challenges in delivering a new nuclear power station.

Key Responsibilities of the Role will be:
Applying technical knowledge to act as an Intelligent Customer when discussing methods of verification with design engineers and vendors.
Specifying requirements for verification activities within the strategy, including rig tests and analyses, and confirming these tasks with the relevant parties.
Supporting test programmes that provide verification evidence; for example defining the objectives/requirements for a test, or leading a project of laboratory-style testing.
Ensuring all verification activities undertaken, whether internally or within the supply chain, are conducted to a high standard.
Collating verification evidence as it is produced and using it to assess design compliance to requirements.
