An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Test Rig Design Engineer- Mechanical, to work for Rolls-Royce SMR in Derby or Warrington on projects that will contribute to the global reduction of carbon emissions. This role offers the unique opportunity to be involved with the design project for a new nuclear power station and the establishment of a world-class testing capability. Blueprint Recruitment, working with Rolls-Royce SMR and Morson RPO, are looking for a talented and ambitious engineer to join Rolls-Royce SMR’s innovative and dynamic Test Capability Team.

About the Role:

The Test Rig Design Engineer will be responsible for the mechanical engineering design development of test rigs which provide data for a range of complex fluid system and mechanical problems. The test rig designs will be developed through a series of gated reviews, requiring the use of systems engineering and process design techniques to develop robust solutions that meet the project requirements.

The Development Engineering organisation itself has responsibilities for proving that the SMR power station design meets its objectives and requirements. This will encompass the area of nuclear engineering as well as the broader scope of delivering a major infrastructure project.

About You:

You will be a Chartered Engineer (or working towards professional accreditation) and have a degree in Physical Sciences, Mathematics or a related discipline. You will also have:

  • Knowledge of mechanical design fundamentals
  • Mechanical design knowledge of one or more of: complex mechanical structures, vessels, tanks, valves, pumps, heat exchangers, actuation methods, heating sources, low and high pressure system equipment
  • Familiarity with systems engineering principles is desirable
  • A willingness to challenge conventional thinking with the desire to make a difference

Key Responsibilities of the Role will be:

  • Applying systems and process engineering techniques to develop test rigs from concept through to detailed design and operation
  • Developing conceptual and detailed designs for a range of components and sub-systems
  • Defining and manage test rig requirements, including systems, components and installations
  • Developing engineering assessments e.g. mechanical designs, component selection and heat balance calculations
  • Developing design documentation including P&IDs and operating philosophies
  • Working in a multidisciplinary engineering team to deliver an optimised test rig
  • Working closely with power station design teams, suppliers, and external test houses
  • Acting as a technical representative for assigned test rigs at technical and project reviews
